We are a collective of Passionate Divemasters and Instructors who live and work here in Khao Lak. We have spent several years here, and absoloutly love this area. We have incredible diving, beautiful rainforest and some of the most wonderful people we've ever met. We belive that by sharing our area you will come to understand why we fell in love. There are large and small resorts, and there was the tsunami but in spite of this people are still very authentic and friendly. The surrounding area is just phenomenal with 70 km of white sand beaches, the largest national park in Thailand and the second largest lake in Thailand.
Did we mention the diving? The Similans have more than 50 named dive sites (and many more besides!), there is Koh Bon (Manta's), Koh Tachai (Manta's, sharks and nudibranchs), Richelieu rock (you name it) but also the Surin Islands and our secret house reefs (not so secret anymore) and two of the best Shipwrecks in Thailand.
Now that may sound nice, but from november until May the weather is just about perfect. The rest of the year we have monsoons that keep everything lush and green.
Phuket International airport is less than One hour south - which means we are closer to the airport that the main tourist beaches of Phuket! Shhh - we don't want them to find out ;)
We don't see ourselves as visitors, we try to take part in the community and give back as much as we can. We live here and feel that the more that we can do to help, the better. Participation in local beach and reef clean-ups aren't mandatory, but we always pitch in a hand. We encourage recycling and appropriate garbage disposal. On all our Day Trips we bring the rubbish back with us, and live by a "Leave no Trace" philosphy whenever visiting the islands. If you would like top particiapte in local activities -especially Turtle nest protection let us know, we'll help arrange things for you (we're probably already there!)
While diving we also live by a strict "No Touching" policy - so no gloves!
Take pictures, leave bubbles...You will see on our breifings and debriefings how much we are involved.
We realized that this area is going to grow and going to change, but we are trying to encourage positive growth and change. We are hoping to avoid getting Phuket'd. So check out our "Action" page for cool places to eat and drink that really help out the community, or just stop by for a chat. We love to help out. Sit a spell and have some tea and chat. There's no need to hurry...
We also feel very strongly about supporting the community at large, not just the divers.
We encourage you to eat at restaurants that were here before the tsunami, and helped when times were tough. There are even a few bars that opened up to exploit the disaster, we recommend places to spend your money that actually help our community.
We encourage the use of companies, services and people that were here before, during and after the tsunami. All our Thai staff are long time residents. Whenever possible we choose to shop, eat and spend our money with those that are residents and we try to keep all our money within the community.
If you have more questions, or anything you'd like to know about us, our shop or the area in general, please just contact us, drop by the shop.
